The Buckley family and Kirsten spent most of their spare time sprucing up the large flower garden at the back of the big house in preparation for the party. They didn’t have a swimming pool, but there was a built-in barbecue and enough space for setting up tables and chairs around the blazing red, peach and yellow rosebushes, and the beds of zinnias, chrysanthemums, marigolds and asters in brilliant shades of gold, pink and violet.

By Saturday night all the food that could be fixed ahead of time was prepared and stored in the refrigerator and the garden was a riot of blossoms and color. It wasn’t going to be a big party. They’d invited several of Jim’s closest friends, and each of his daughters had been allowed to ask a guest of her own age. Most of them would be strangers to Kirsten, but that didn’t matter. As long as Sam would be there she didn’t need anybody else to keep her company.
